After Dorian breaks up with Sibyl Vane, he wanders the streets til dawn, when he watches the flower vendors at Covent Garden. Among the blooms are yellow roses, symbolizing Sibyl's broken heart, and lilies, foreshadowing Sibyl's death.
Violets for dead love abound. Lord Henry says: “I once wore nothing but violets all through one season, as a form of artistic mourning for a romance that would not die.” And after Basil's death, Dorian wears a buttonhole of violets.
Upon learning of Sibyl's death, Dorian says “I must sow poppies in my garden." Opium is derived from poppies, symbolizing sleep and forgetfulness.
Lilacs are at the forefront of Lord Henry and Dorian's first meeting. "Dorian Gray listened, open-eyed and wondering. The spray of lilac fell from his hand upon the gravel…." Lost innocence, indeed!
Dorian is compared most often to a red rose, a symbol of beauty and youth.
