Flower names abound in The Great Gatsby. Daisy, whose name means innocence and loyalty, is revealed to be greedy and inconstant. Myrtle, whose name means fidelity, especially in marriage, is having an affair with a married man. Nick Carraway, though, stays truer to his namesake's meaning: loyalty.
During the course of the novel, Nick Caraway is entrusted with many secrets, for which the rose has long been a symbol (for example, sub rosa literally means "under the rose," and denotes secrecy). Daisy even refers to him as a rose once - "I love to see you at my table, Nick. You remind me of a – of a rose, an absolute rose."
Gatsby and Daisy meet again for the first time in five years under a bare lilac tree. Lilacs mean first love; taken together with the bare tree, this foreshadows the loss of love between Gatsby and Daisy.
